Anne Wellmer | nonlinear (D/NL) is a composer performer and sound artist based in the Hague. I draw inspiration from a love for stories and changing skies, a fascination for generative processes and lists, an admiration for conceptual art, experimental music and absurd scenarios. I am interested in performance environments where acoustic and amplified sounds share the same sonic space and fascinated by the fact that electricity lies at the core of all matter.
again and again and again (2022) is a piece for voice and laptop. It is divided into different parts, each of which is based on specific recycled sound and image sources, such as recordings made in 2008 with analog video synthesizers at the Experimental Television Center in Owego upstate New York, or an electric toothbrush duett with Relly Tarlo recorded in Brussels 2011 and test recordings made for “waves”, and a piece for 8 Indian harmoniums and church organ at Grote Kerk in The Hague in 2012. During the Teufelsberg Domecast I expect to explore the resonant frequencies enhanced by the reverberant dome with a number of very different sound sources. This performance is dedicated to my composition teacher Alvin Lucier. The lyrics to “I am sitting in a room” (1969) by Alvin Lucier (1931-2021): I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed. What you will hear, then, are the natural resonant frequencies of the room articulated by speech. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to smooth out any irregularities my speech might have.
